A few weeks ago I couldn’t even log into my own website. I had it for years I just didn’t know what to do. Since then I have learned a few pointers.
Picking a theme
I didn’t even know what a theme was. Basically it’s the template that makes your blog look a certain way. There are tons of free ones. Picking a theme and looking through thousands of different looks for my blog almost made my head explode. Seriously you can only look at so many themes before they all start looking alike. Then Mike at Blogthority suggested this theme called Cutline which I really like and which more importantly worked which the other theme I picked didn’t. So thanks Mike.
Content
You have to have content which I am trying to do. I am writing as much as possible about different things, mostly about real estate. I am also finding other blogs and looking up stuff one the internet. It’s not easy to come up with things to write about.
Search Engine Optimization
This is another subject that is making my head explode. Literally I am reading tons of stuff about this. Why is this important? Well if you don’t know about SEO, you can write all the great stuff you want but no one will know about you. You have to figure out a way to get people to your website. Google won’t know about you or your great content if your website won’t allow their website reading robots onto your site. So then someone types Landlord Rescue into their search engine and I’m on page 99. I’m still working on this obviously.
Google Analytics
The science of measuring the above SEO. Checking to see what people are doing on your site. I set up this account yesterday.
Thank god I have so much help from great bloggers out there. Frugal Trader from Million Dollar Journey is also helping me with some of this stuff. He’s supposed to peek over here later and check things out.
WordPress Plugins
There’s another million of these. These are little programs that make your blog do extra stuff like comments and RSS feeds. I also used a plugin yesterday to install some code into my website to allow Google Analytics to work. My head almost exploded when I was reading about that too.
So this is some of the stuff I have learned so far. Plus I’m really in danger of my head exploding, there is so much information on the web about all these subjects I find myself reading site after site with no real Eureka moments. In the meantime I’m just clicking on randomish stuff hoping nothing breaks.
